Android Client Crashing
If you are having issues with an application on your Android device, such as frequent crashes, not opening or responding, or not working properly in general, please follow the troubleshooting steps below.
Some problems could be caused by another app later downloaded to your device, such as antivirus software, task killers, or power/battery saving apps. If you downloaded any new apps in a similar time frame that the problems started, always uninstall new/recent applications first, one at a time. Each time you uninstall an app, check to see if your issues are resolved. Upon completion of each step, please check to see if that step fixed your issue.
- Restart your phone by pressing and holding the power button for a few seconds. Then, on your screen, tap Restart. If you don't see "Restart"; press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds, until your phone restarts. System updates can bring improvements that could fix your issue.
- To check for and install system updates:Open your device's Settings app.
Near the bottom, tap System, Advanced, System update. If
needed, first tap ‘About’ phone. You'll see your update status.
Follow any steps on the screen. App updates can bring
improvements that could fix your issue. - To see and get updates for your apps:
1. Open your device's Play Store app.
2. Tap Menu, My apps & games.
3. Apps with available updates are labeled "Update."
4. If an update is available, tap Update.
5. If more updates are available, tap Update all.
Application Specific: Use on the Malfunctioning App
1. In general, you don't need to close apps. Android automatically
manages the memory that apps use.
2. To completely shut down an app, including any background services
that it may be using:
a. Open your device's Settings app.
b. Tap Apps & notifications.
c. Tap the app.
If you don't see it, first tap ‘See all apps’ or ‘App info’.
d. Tap ‘Force stop’
3. If problems continue after you've force stopped the app, continue to
Clear Cache. Clearing cached data can free up needed space by
removing temporary files. This is a short-term solution. Over time,
cached data will build up again.
4. To clear the cache for the app:
a. Open your device's Settings
b. Tap Apps & notifications.
c. Tap the app.
If you don't see it, first tap See all apps or App info.
d. Tap Storage Clear cache.
If the issue persists, proceed to Clear Data.
e. Clearing an app's data can resolve most issues, but will reset the application, clearing any data that you have previously saved in the application.
f. To clear an app's data. Caution: Any data saved in this app will be erased.
i. Open your device's Settings app.
ii. Tap Apps & notifications.
iii. Tap the app.
1. If you don't see it, first tap ‘See all apps’ or ‘App info’
iv. Tap ‘Storage’, ‘Clear storage’ or ‘Clear data’. ‘OK’
1. If problems persist, Uninstall the application.
g. To uninstall an app. Caution: Any data saved in this app will be erased.
i. Touch and hold the app you want to uninstall.
ii. Drag the app to Uninstall at the top of the screen.
1. *If you cannot Uninstall the app, then it is likely a system app. You would instead Disable.
2. To disable a system app:
a. Open your device's Settings app.
b. Tap Apps & notifications.
c. Tap the app you want to disable.
i. If you don't see it, first tap ‘See all apps’ or ‘App info’.
d. Tap ‘Disable’
